Q-Review
Godzilla is approaching
50 years old. Not bad for a radioactive amphibian. Excluding the
great American film experiment entitled "Godzilla" back in 1998,
this franchise has been exclusively associated with Japan. It is
fitting that Godzilla should return with Takayuki Hatori at the scoring
helm. Hatori employs the now famous Godzilla theme originally penned
by Akira Ifukube to keep the movie-lineage of the great monster alive.
Hatori's latest effort for the big 'phibian is a fully orchestral score that
is just tinny enough to remind us that Godzilla will always be best viewed
in a big rubber suit fighting another guy in a big rubber suit- and not
fighting Ferris Beuller in a CG vs Flesh undercard bout. GNP Crescendo
continues to provide the film music world with high quality recording of Big
Green's film music and adds Godzilla 2000 to its two Best of Godzilla
releases.

The
Bottom Line
The recording
quality is not quite as bright as most Crescendo releases, but is above
average for most other labels. There is nearly an hour's worth of
music contained on 36 tracks, which is ample. Takayuki Hatori's score
is adequate for its subject; however it will not overly impress most and is
much more sentimental than one might expect.
